I think the real problem here is that you recently posted a
world-class, top-notch, portfolio stuffer and we expect you to
follow that up with an even better one.

Unfortunately, it's the hyper critical thinking that does get us
in trouble sometimes. I take what I think is a wc,tn,ps
photograph, print it up large and stick it on my cube farm wall.
What started out as great turns ugly pretty fast. There aren't
many prints that survive a week. However, two have surived for
over a year!

This is MY process for improving my photography. I want my
photographs to have "legs" and be just as interesting years
after they've been put up on display. A case in point is the
picture on my homepage. Does it have "way cool" characteristics
to it? Yup. Does it jump at you and demand your attention?
Yup. Is it selling? Yup. The problem is that I'm already
tired of it. Is it the crop? No. Is it the colors? No. Is it
the general composition? No. It's just that it's a photograph
that predefines the outcome too much for longevity. It's an
entertaining photograph, but doesn't have the legs to hold my
attention for long. Maybe a B&W print (haven't even processed
those negs yet) will change my mind...

I come back around, now, to Richard's Winter 6 photo. I actually
like it, not for the crop, the angles or the general subject
(snow). What I like about it is that I can dwell on it for a
long time. The photograph doesn't too tightly define the
interpretation. For example, typical macro flower pictures show
off how pretty a flower is against a posterboard background.
Attention getting and "loud", these photographs garner immediate
attention, but after a while it's just decoration. Richard's
photograph is strong not for the power positions, the angles, or
the shutter speeds. It is strong because I can lose myself in
the photograph and impose my own feelings, emotions and
experiences into it.
