Skip makes excellent points about the surrounding support
systems involved with digital imaging. Last year when I bought
my A1, I had the choice betweeen it and the A2 which sports 8MP
vs 5MP.
I decided to purchase the lesser camera because:
1. price difference was about $400 which is significant for
digicam. The lower price allows me to "justify" a better camera
purchase (E-x, or equiv) in the near future.
2. Computer horsepower/storage. My ancient computer (still
gasping on Win98) isn't fast enough to effectively choke through
the images as fast at the 5MP.
3. Storage. 1GB doesn't go as far with the larger sensors as the
smaller ones.
4. Performance issues of the cameras themselves.
By buying the lesser camera, I also bought myself an entire year
or more of computer life out of the old system. I've been able
to make it through entire event shoots on a single 1GB card.
This $400 upfront decision may have saved over an additional
$1500 in the medium run.
