From what I can tell without trying one, the speed issue is tied up
with choice of interface and software. Forum dwellers often say that
switching from USB 1.1 to SCSI makes anywhere from a significant to a
huge increase in speed. Vuescan is also supposed to be faster than
CanoScan. Some were also running relatively slow computers with
relatively small memory. I don't know at what point computer speed in
handling the data stream passes the scanner speed or exactly how much
memory is necessary for optimum scanning speed, but it seems clear these
are factors. With a P$ 2.8ghz and 1gb of memory, I shouldn't be slowing
down the scanner. I'm also hoping the latest in SCSI cards with higher
theoretical throughput will eliminate another bottleneck.

The other speed issue in favor of the Nik*n is the add-on slide feeder,
but I just don't see myself paying what one costs. And my negs are all
in strips, so the roll feeder isn't even an option. Just going from
scanning one image at a time to 4-6 at a time sounds great for now.

I'm really hoping the 4870 (is a report from you coming soon?) and/or
9950F will prove to be a good solution for scanning batches of old film,
leaving just the best for the film scanner.

The FS4000 will be here sooner than I expected. The seller just e-mailed
that instead of the UPS ground shipping specified in the listing and
that I paid for, "I appreciate the prompt payment, so even though it was
a tad expensive, I shipped the box 2-Day air ". Doesn't sound like your
usual *Bay seller! He's even included a sample full rez scan on CD and
advice on SCSI set-up. He seems really anxious for me to get great results.
