It's a rather odd game invented by murkins because they can't cope with
cricket, lacking the patience for a five day game of subtle strategy
with near infinite variables, many beyond the control of the players
and organisers. Ken Burns admitted in his fine documentary that it was
deliberately invented for that reason. These are people who prefer
games to be short, indoors, high scoring and with lots of opportunities
for advertising breaks, a taste that isolates them from the general
international sporting community (the one that plays real football
rather than a regional novelty code). Heck, they don't even horse race
on turf much anymore.
Consequently, they have trapped themselves into a series of
irrelevancies where car races have turns all in the same direction,
most people can't play at high level 'cos they're too short or you have
to change the entire team every five minutes because none of them can
run more than a few yards every period in full armour plating.
That said, baseball is about the best of the bunch apart from the
bizarre tendency to spitting, brawls and very, very bad organ music.
(or was that basketball?)
