Why?  Acetone is one of the best cleaners around for cleaning optical
surfaces.  You do have to be extremely careful with it since the surrounding
materials (paint, plastics, etc.) can be easily damaged by acetone.  It's
also extremely flammable so use with utmost care.  I've cleaned many OM
mirrors with acetone and it works fine as long as you keep it away from the
rest of the mirror box.  It's also an excellent solvent for removing the
bonding glue used to hold lens rings and screws in place.
