Aha, I didn't know the first one turned out bad (the price was *too* good!).
But pleased to hear it turned out well, at a good price, even though 2x the
original!

In fact the one I had from new had a similar problem - the zoom guides
jammed up, but it was, fortunately, fixed under warranty (though it never
quite focused to infinity after that).

The original later having been stolen, I sifted through a few 'rattlers'
before choosing its replacement, which was mechanically OK, but needed a
clean. The repair guy was very relieved to find that he could do that by
simply taking out the front element, as getting in deeper requires a
daunting amount of disassembly. You can see the keyways on the rear edge of
the focusing ring and the front edge of the zooming ring. Don't go in
there!

Moral - these are not expensive, so choose a good one. I'll be interested
to hear how good you find yours to be, Moose. I have the original Modern
Photography review. Its summary field test findings were "well exposed
sharp images with very very slight pincushion distortion" at 50mm and 80mm
and at 35mm "noticeable barrel distortion and slightly soft overall images
at f/2.8, by f/5.6 slides displayed sharp crsip images with high contrast".
(If anybody is really interest, I will put the test on the web - along with
this week's AP test of the Zuiko Digital 14-54 and 300/2.8).

I've only had the lens for a couple of days, so no film developed yet. I
have considerable faith in the Tamron SP line in general and I believe this
model got excellent reviews when it was a current model. And the one I ended
up with is certainly not subject to any wear and tear that might affect
performance.
