Your body weight on an SUV roof is going to make the thing move a lot. There
are some very nice camera supports to place on the roof of a vehicle though.
One is made by Rue and is called a Groofwin Pod
(http://www.rue.com/supports.html) and a similar one is made by another one
of the high-end outfits but I can't remember who. The Groofwin will mount on
ground, roof, or window, which is where the goofy name comes from. I made my
own while laid up a couple of years ago but would not recommend that as it
was a lot of work. /jmac

Pretty sure the roof 'rack' of most modern SUVs would be jeopardized by
weight constraints of what you're suggesting. Truth be known, most of them
are almost more ornamental than truly functional. You'll want to check into
that, first and foremost.
I think you need to procure a used double decker from London Transit.....
