I assume you have heard about software rust? Software rusts over time
and you have to clean it up and repaint it. Are you running scanner software
at the same time as Photoshop?

I found out that running Photoshop and film scanner software at the same
time causes everything to slow to a crawl. Especially if I run NikonScan.
Now I run the scanner on a separate computer. NikonScan seems to leave
the system in a bad state, so I reboot after scanning before running PS
(this is on win2k, P4 1.9G). Scanner software is very CPU intensive.

Now on a separate computer, PS runs fast. Once PS starts caching to
disk it becomes slow. I have an Asus P4P800 board running 3.0GHz P4 and
raid 0 mode to two identical 7400rpm drives, which gives the best speed
performance. I also find WinXP works better than W2k for startup, and may
be better optimized overall. A lot of systems actually get slower with more than
1GB of memory, so don't try to over do the memory. With Raid 0 mode
make sure you backup important data, and pick reliable drives. I like Seagate
but all manufacturers have good and bad versions.
