Here in the US we call a mix of salt water and fresh water  
"brackish"...;-)

Speaking of reliability though (wasn't that the original topic?) I 
carried my OM-1MD through all sorts of dust , sand-storms, rain, 
humidity and a little high-altitude snow on two extended road trips, 
one in the US (three months, 1976) and one in Oz (one month, 1988) and 
never had a problem. On particularly dicey days, kept the camera in a 
zip-loc bag, cut a hole in one corner of the bag opposite the "mouth", 
put rubber band around lens to somewhat seal it.
