There are a number of possibilities, most relating to cracked solder joints
and short circuits on the LCD-D circuit, but it may be almost anything from a
loose ground screw to complete circuit failure.  Whenever we see this sort of
unusual malady, we just lift the LCD-D and start by touching up all the solder
joints, then check for pinched wires and cut insulation as we snug down the
ground screws when reinstalling the circuit.  If that doesn't fix it, it
likely needs a new LCD-D.
