I believe that MLU came first simply because it came before auto stop - down
mechanisms.

The aperture pre - fire element of the later OM cameras is at least partly
due to the use of an electronic self - timer, which would require too much
power to press the shutter button a la OM1, so uses an interrupter in the
mirror - box - mechanism to shutter - mechanism. The mirror box goes through
the complete opening cycle, then the lever which triggers the shutter is
interrupted by a solenoid like the one which closes the shutter.
This makes me believe that the benefits are incidental to the design, but
given that there are other ways of doing it, they must have at least thought
about it.

At a wild guess, Oly made some tests which showed that the stop - down
vibration was fundamentally due to the camera, not the lenses. Otherwise the
change to auto - aperturing on the macros would have lead to an outcry over
reduced quality, so they must have had reasonable certainty that the system
they moved to was not worse than the original.

Personally, I love 'em all, but the mechanical ones tend to stay at home.
