I haven't been using the 'net since forever (only about 8
years), but even from my early days the "rule" was that your
images should be below 100kB.

Of course, saying that, for images which are "snapshotty",
or information content only, or relatively meaningless
(eg. logos, etc.) I'd not have the patience to wait that
long on my dial-up. However, for photos (non-"snapshotty")
or artworks which are *meant* to convey their graphic
quality, I think this "rule" is well and truly fair enough.
I'm more than willing to be a little patient to obtain
the improvement that provides (though, of course, I'd
try to make them smaller if it made no or miniscule 
difference). This is presuming "thumbnails" precede.

Just my subjective opinion of course.
