I've a similar, although more current memory myself. When I was in
technical training school for the Air Force, I had an opportunity to travel
to a small Air National Guard installation to take in an air show. As it
turned out, it was one of the last show the Thunderbirds did flying F-4s.
It can't compare to the wonderful drone of 12 and 16 cylinder Merlins and
Allisons, but you haven't lived until you've been about 100 yards from five
F-4s all lighting off their burners at once. Talk about an earth shaking
experience.

Unlimited hydroplanes used to be powered by Merlins and Allisons. Growing
up in Seattle, within biking distance of the race course on Lake Washington,
I've got glorious memories of the sights and SOUNDS of those aptly named
'thunderboats'...

Thanks for prompting the fond memories, Chuck.
