Well... Having been a professional web-dev-er for 4 years now, my
conclusions regarding browsers are:

PC:
==
-Up until the version 4 browsers, Netscape was the better of NS vs. IE, and
it was a pain to make anything look decent in IE 3 and lower.
-NS 4.x and IE 4.x: here matters are the other way round, IE has gotten
their act together, and supports the W3C standards pretty well. NS 4.x
browsers are plainly horrible where W3C standards support is concerned.
-IE 5 and 6, and NS6.x: Now both are really well in the race, NS 6 browsers
are almost as flexible as the IE ones. W3C standards are supported very well
now, yet with DHTML IE still has a slight edge, but it's only a minor one.
IOW: NS 6 browsers are really good, and can be used without issues for the
majority of all web pages out there.
-Other browsers: Opera 5 and 6 may be fast, but they are a bit less tight on
DHTML (and plain CSS) support than IE4+ and NS6+. Mozilla is good, really
good. Mozilla 0.6 still has some weird quirks and DHTML and CSS hick-ups,
but as of version 0.7, matters have been pretty good. For those of you who
like the NS4.x look and feel, and want decent DHTML/CSS support, go for a
Mozilla browser, you'll love it!

MAC:
===
-IE has been implemented in such a way that it is tremendously slow with
Javascript and long tables. For some reason the bl**dy thing often
reinterprets the _whole_ page again after a small DHTML update in one table
cell. Yes, there are some ways around some of these issues, but this is not
the case for all of them. Still, DHTML support in IE on the Mac seems to
have been taken to a higher level than in NS.
-NS, as far as I've heard, works faster and often better than IE. As
mentioned, DHTML support is not completely of the same level as in IE, but
for the majority of the pages, this seems to be no issue.

Other OSes:
==========
Dunno really. Anyone can fill me in on the gory details? :)

Cheers!
Olafo
