It depends on the severity of the fungus.  If it's not too severe, Pond's
will work fine, as will many other things like nose grease.  In some cases
the fungus will have etched the coating and/or the glass.  In these cases
it's usually uneconomical to repair the element.

It unscrews counter clockwise.  The best tool to use is a rubber stopper.
Seach around hardware stores for a suitable size sink plug.  You can also
try and find a lab supply store and see if they have something suitable.
You may have to cut a larger one down to size, but it should work fine.

The only real tool you'll need is a good spanner wrench.  Micro-tools
(http://www.micro-tools.com) has quite a choice.
