Hi Richard.

OK. I'll keep this relatively short and then we can discuss more specific
details later.

Let's say that I have a greyscale image with full tonal range from 0% black
to 100% black.

Now assuming that Prepress at print shop doesn't adjust my files I know that
if I'm on a printing on a good press using nice, coated paper the final
printed piece will show everything from about 98% black as 100% black and 2%
black as 0% white.

If I'm printing the same image on a newsprint I know that from about 93%
black on will print as 100% black because the ink soaks in so much(aka Dot
Gain). Also the rest of the image is going to appear darker because of the
Dot Gain and the fact that the paper is not really white but grey.

So if I want to take the image I've printed on coated paper, print it on
newsprint and achieve the same sort of look I need to reduce the levels of
black throughout the image.

The newer versions of Photoshop have all sorts of automated color settings
that supposedly do this sort of thing for you but in my experience they
don't work as well as doing it myself... Although I admit that I need to
experiment more with Photoshop's color conversions.

Now, having said all that I would like to also say that the combination of
an Apple 17" CRT Studio Display and the Epson C80 RGB color space does
provide a fairly accurate monitor calibration to my C80 printer.

The key is that you must have the Gamut Warning turned on(under the VEIW
menu) so you can see what colors the printer can't produce. IMO the
calibration would be a LOT better if it simply didn't show colors that
couldn't be printed.
