 That is conventional wisdom, but there is a lot of discussion on the
 web about the short life of current black and white materials.

And it is just impractical to make thousands of "three copy B+W" negatvies.
Shoot/combining a three "color" B+W neg. is hard to control the color
accuracy too, not to mention the losses during duplication.
