Although not absolutely necessary, stopbath does help prolong
the fixer and also yields slightly more constant results.  Some
people use a waterbath between the developer and the fixer. 
Stopbath is inexpensive enough and it only takes a few seconds
that I don't hesitate to use it.

Gone are the days (when I was a kid) when the paper would bubble
and fizz when processing.  Just isn't the same with modern RC
papers and chemistry.
