My bet would be that the tiny little contact pad underneath the collar around 
the
release button has gotten stiff and hard -- that or it's corroded.  The probable
solution is to replace w/used parts from a similar version (there were two -- of
course! This _is_ an Olympus we're talking about! ;^)

Yes, your camera will work just fine, whether the display is on or not.  If you
want some idea what the shutter speed will be, just move the meter switch back 
and
forth to activate the LED display for another 90 seconds.  Even in the "OFF"
position, the OM-10 will function in whatever mode you've set -- Auto, Manual
(Adapter), B.
