The big difference seems to in the quality of type with HP beating out most of the others. It is difficult to tell from a good laser printer. In a couple of tests I have read: MacWorld and Consumer Reports type quality was #1 with HP and Lexmark with a very close second by Canon and Epson doing only so so. There seems to be a relationship between a good photo print and less good type representation so Epson usually, but not always gets the top spot in a comparison article. I just got a Canon S450 for only $69 to supplement my previously expensive Epson Photo EX and the improvement in type quality, speed and quietness is amazing. I still use the Epson for its photo quality though.

It depends on what you think is important.

The race seems to be between Canon and Epson at present. In the
latest edition of MacFormat in the UK they plumped for the Canon S800
for its combination of high quality with speed - but they
acknowledged that the price was a major factor (£300).

The Epson 895, on the other hand, is much cheaper at about £180, but
is slower as well. If you don't need the ability to read a memory
card (for no-computer transfer from digicam to print), the 890 is
cheaper at about £150 - that last is my information by the way.

I am considering upgrading my colour printer from a HP R45 Office Jet to an
Epson printer. The three models that are available in Denmark are the 1290,
the 890, and the 790. The 1290 costs around $500 and is beyond my present
means. the 890 costs around $250, and the 790 around $150. The specs for
the 790 and the 890 appear to be the same (the 890 is a little faster).

I would appreciate the opinions of our Epson experts as to whether there is
any reason that I should choose the 890 over the 790.

And is the Epson really a significant upgrade over a HP colour printer?
