 Ooh, I know this one -- it's cut out where the corners of the frame would
be in the final image. That way it doesn't get darkened unfortunately there.

True. Since the hood locks into place they can do this. When the hood does not lock into the same position each time, the hood has to be round and wide enough to shade the diagonal.
