The angle to the sun is important. I tend to rotate the polarizer for maximum
darkening of the sky (a reasonably critical position) and adjust from there. At
maximum effect the sky can look an unatural deep blue. It will, of course, only
darken a blue sky (cloud scatters the light so that it becomes randomly
polarized).
