Indeed he did - we even got a nice big obit in the local paper here in
Melbourne. I suspect that the big flash bulbs are used because they have a
monstrous light output - the meggaflash site is fascinating. Cost must be
pretty monstrous too.
When I was a little lad I had the job of taking a photographer into
factories to shoot machines for my employer - a shoe machinery
manufacturer. This guy shot 4x5 with 2 minute exposures and routinely
'painted with light' with a small, hand held flash unconnected to the
camera - to avoid fancy light and reflector setups. The shots were
painfully sharp - but we still had them retouched as a matter of routine.
