That was exactly my view. I really believe the battery bit is probably over
stressed. In 4-5 years of OM-2S use as a primary camera, I only had one
instance where I had the batteries die in mid use. And I had spares, so it
was no big deal.

The batteries are cheap, check frequently, replace as needed, etc.

I do wonder if some cases are worse about the accidental turn on bit. I use
a Lowepro Photo Runner, and have never seen an accidental turn on, even when
I tried to make it happen. And most OM-2S's I have handled were finicky
about the dial light to the point where you really had to press it to get it
to turn on, so I'd really be suprised if this happened much.

A far more real issue is the Flash drain issue. (The red/green LED bit) The
time my batteries went during mid shoot was due to long periods of flash
ready. Hate to turn the flash off, and miss a shot. So I had to live with
it. But again, batteries are cheap enough to replace them prior to any
marathon shoot.

I have now switched to OM4-T, and really like it. I do think the OM-2S is
undervalued/appreciated. Spot is very important to me, and is one feature I
insist upon having for all my cameras (OM-4T, IS-3, D-600L, Stylus Epic).
The IS series has this down pat. It is intuitive, and just works well. In
fact, I really have to work hard to beat the IS results with my OM4T &
Sunpak 444d combination. I use fill flash quite a bit, and as mentioned many
times on the list, this is not an OM strength. In fact, I really wish there
was a flashamatic mode on the OM! I end up doing it manually, which is OK,
but the IS-3 seems to have this need down pat.

But regarding the 2S repair & circuit availability issues, this was pretty
much not a concern for me. The camera functioned well, and never had a
problem in that area. If it had, I would have found another 2S if it was not
repairable. Bang for the buck, it's just hard to beat. All the OM's have
their advantages and disadvantages. Different shutter shounds & feel. Same
for the winder feel. The 4T works great, but I am not as dialed in to using
it as I was for the 2S. It will come with time, I guess.

All that said, the Olympus D-600L digital has sure caught my attention! Most
of the features of the IS series, including spot, flashamatic, and fill.
Great exposure, decent lens, Macro mode, etc. And for me, not having ready
access to a film scanner, the D-600 digital results beat 35mm scanned 5x7
prints. I am envious of the scanned images I see posted on this list, and
would love to have a film scanner, but I may just make the leap to a used
E-10 in 2-3 years. For casual use, the D-600 works great, and was the best
$300 or so I have spent recently! (Talk about minimal battery life, however!
Don't even bother with Alkalines. Go straight to Hi Cap NIMh, and you are
OK.)

Well, enough rambling. I would love to have kept my OM-2S, as a backup, but
the finances did not allow that. This IS fills this role neatly, and the
D-600 is seeing lot's of car duty lately.

Have fun!

Alan
