Why would you want to potentially degrade the performance of such a high
performance lens by sticking a filter in front of it?

Gary Reese's tests of filters clearly indicate that there is a high
probability they will degrade the image quality.

If you are seeking to protect the front element, the best way to do this
is to ensure you always extend the hood immediately after removing the
lens cap/snood. That will offer far more protection than a filter IMO.

I have a 180/2 and rely on the hood for protection rather than a filter.

Sir Giles,

You are threatening to invite one of the nastiest arguments photographers tend to have - whether to protect a lens with a filter or a hood. ;-) I am a lens cap & hood man myself; I don't believe in degrading lens performance by using a filter. However, there are those who perennially lose lens caps and eschew hoods who absolutely insist that the filter is the best protection. Their argument seems to be that once you screw the filter on you can just forget about the lens protection problem. As the Godfather, Don Vito Corleone, puts it, "I can't reason with these people." ;-)
