[OM] E10 in hand

I dropped by a local photo store today. One part of the counter was
draped with a Olympus cloth and on top of the cloth was a selection of
digital Oly gear including an E10. The Olympus rep was behind the
counter along with the store's sales reps. The store rep was showing a
Nikon D1 to a customer when I picked up the E10, the store rep stopped
talking to his customer and started saying how great the E10 was.

The E10 is an impressive piece of equipment; felt good in the hands,
bright viewfinder display (not as bright as OM's) included shutter speed
and aperture. The lens focused smoothly in manual focus, and the zoom
also felt smooth. The manual focus ring apparently controls the focus
motor and is not marked for focus distance or depth of field.

Downside: Confusing selection of buttons and knobs to control all the
functions; even the Olympus rep found one he hadn't seen before and he's
had one for over a month (RTFM).

There is a built in flash, a pc connecter and a hot shoe for a dedicated
unit, four different flash cords are available. It has a remote
available and a 10M (?) remote cord. A macro attachment lens will be
available early next year, and the 420mm in the summer.

The shutter sound is a choice of a beep, none, a OM1 shutter, or an OM
motor drive.

The zuikolic in me is very tempted, they'll have some available next
week for $1995 which is believe is list price. The choice for me is
either a slide/film scanner or the E10, going to be a tough choice.

Bill B.

p.s. the olympus rep didn't take me up on my offer of a mint OM1n for
the E10.
