Hmmm, might be yet another benefit of the depression in the shoe.

If you look at the "T" series flashes (T-20 and T-32, and presumably the
F-280) you will find a small black protrusion in the location of this
depression in the shoe.  Push on it and you will see the two smaller
contacts retract into the foot of the flash.  I always thought it was on
the flash unit to retract the extra contacts for "flash ready" and "flash
quench" to keep the flash from acting weird if placed in a flash shoe for
the QA-310 or a non-OM flash shoe.  Consequently any OM shoe made for the
"T" series flashes would require that depression to allow the contacts to
protrude.  BTW, it also helps mount the flash by retracting the two
contacts as you start to slide it into the shoe.
