I know that at least the very front piece of even some of your venerated
favorites is plastic.  Take a close look at your 35-70 3.5-4.5 if you have
one.  The front element is held by a plastic cylinder.  Don't know if any of
the other parts of that particular lens are plastic or not, but I don't
believe that most of the aperture rings I've seen are anodized.  An anodic
coating doesn't generally leave that dark a hue of black.  I'm sure John
will set us all straight shortly.

The aperture rings are not painted, but rather anodized, whcih is why you
can
remove the colored paint without removing the underlying black color. I
think
most of the lenses are anodized after being engraved. The 'silver nosed'
versions may not be though.
