In a nutshell:

black = new
silver = old

It's more complicated than that, but the earliest Zuikos were silvernosed.
In the 'slower' lenses (such as the 35/2.8 - I own a silvernose), it means
that it is single coated (SC). On the faster lenses, such as the wide f/2
lenses, it's not that easy as most of them have always been multi-coated,
but some of them have gone through improvements.

All that said, I like the 35/2.8. It is very small and light. With this
being a black nose, it is a newer version (although I don't know if it is
MC -- only Franklin can tell us that).
