Remember that flashbulbs were invented in 1929 by one of the "big three" of
the time (Westinghouse, Sylvania or G.E., I can't remember which). Any old
studio photographs you might have of your ancestors that obviously used a
flash of some type from the early 1930's or before had to use flash powder.
Flashbulbs didn't catch on immediately like any other technological
change. Before WWI and it could easily have been glass plate too. Too
many view cameras were still in use in spite of Kodak inventing roll film
including adapters for old glass plate view cameras to use them. I think
you can still get (or at least get the ingredients) for flash powder. All
you need is a trough, an ignition source, and a camera with a "B" setting
on the shutter speed dial (guess what that's for and where it's label came
from).
