Don't believe all the hype. For all the problems in the middle east,
most people in most places on most days lead a fairly normal
existence, just as you do. Imagine what your concept of New York or
LA would be if all you saw was the network news reports on the
central park attacks, and the NBA riots! While due diligence is well
advised, so is an open mind, and working with the locals.
BBB (who lives where a recent crime wave consisted of a couple of
kids in town that stole change from their neighbors' cars - and it
made front page news!)
