The cautions you are hearing from fellow photogs aren't to be lightly
dismissed. In many of those countries there is tremendous suspicion
concerning foreigners and their attempts to take surreptious photographs --
of any kind. Such people are frequently considered spies. The very fact that
John Q. Tourist might go to great lengths to be sneaky about the photography
would lend credence to one all ready stricken with a bad case of "infidel
paranoia." Of course you might be able to persuade the local police or
military that you were perfectly innocent and/or ignorant of local customs,
but I wouldn't want to wager my next twenty years that I could get away with
it. We aren't talking Western values here. IMHO it's best to be open and
above board, shoot when permitted, and don't shoot when in forbidden areas or
where there is reasonable doubt. I take it you would like to return home with
hide intact and sooner than 15-20 years.
