: Can someone please explain the operation of and difference between Olympus
: manual and auto extension tubes and how to use them both? I have read the
: sequence of operation, but think that it is not very clear.

With the auto tubes operation is identical as with a lens w/o tube: aperture
is automatically closed just before the exposure, and automatically opened
afterwards. This keeps the viewfinder bright during focusing and composing.

With the older manual tubes aperture is closed at the moment you turn the
aperture ring on the lens. The longer the extension and the smaller the
selected aperture, the darker the viewfinder becomes, which can be a
disadvantage with hand-held macro photography: focusing becomes more
difficult. Allthough the manual tubes seem to be obsolete, they have one
advantage with tripod mounted macro photography: possible vibrations caused
by the closing of the aperture are eliminated. This effectively makes image
quality produced by an OM-1 just as good as with an OM-4 or OM-2000, without
the need to use the self-timer. |:-0)
