As the New Yorker headline writer might say, "Suspicions Confirmed." Two
of my freshman year roommates were from small towns outside Chicago.
Both were irrepressible and inveterate punsters. After cringing for
about six months, I finally realized that their behavior was
practically a genetic trait. After a while, I was corrupted enough to
admire the verbal agility involved, and began to enjoy their banter.
Certainly the skill is quite different from British "wit," a form of
banter with which I was much more familiar.
Back to lenses and vantage points.
