Thanks, Gregg. Your explanation was what I was thinking when considering
use of the T-32 firing into an umbrella.

Now I'm kicking myself for selling my TTL multi-connector last year. I
called Olympus Guy, and he has them (new) for about $60 - ouch.

Mike

The camera measures the amount of reflected light from the subject. You can
use this to advantage since the umbrella will be about 1-2 stops less than
the T32 on camera. Move the umbrella closer or further away for different
lighting ratios. To do it right you need a flash meter. But, until you get
one you can experiment and take notes on distance.

to connect the T-32 to the umbrella mast - is there a hot shoe clamp that I
can buy - any suggestions?

If you use a hot shoe clamp you will loose TTL control. That may not be
all bad since you can use the manual settings on the flash to adjust output.
Or you can put tape over the shoe and attach the flash using the TTL cords
available. I have several shoes that came with the umbrella holders that
attach to the light stands. There might even be a few available from list
members. You can also buy a remote flash sensor to put under the flash.
These come with a threaded base for 1/4 20 bolts, but this also cancels the
TTL features. There is also a part that is supposed to be used with the T20
to provide cord attachment that is threaded underneath and allows TTL
control.

I just recently drilled and tapped my light stands to accept a 1/4 20 bolt
which I epoxied in and then cut the head off. I also found a gooseneck with
a big clip at one end at Lowes that I attached a bolt to. It can be
attached to the stand or any other handy location. Now I can use multiple
setups with umbrella, flash only with remote sensor, or with TTL cords off
camera. Now for that elusive 1 into 3 TTL connector and a flash meter!

Also, check back a month or so for info on making a large diffuser from PVC
and material. It only cost about $6 to make. I know this is more than you
asked for, but has been quite useful information for me.
