"Bokeh" is the Japanese term[1] for how the out-of-focus portion of a
picture looks. "good bokeh" is smooth, and does not distract but is
pleasingly smooth, and creamy. "bad bokeh" is harsh, jarring, and draws
you eye away from the subject. Here's an example of what I feel is good:
