I was in Greenland in July - weather is pretty warm then, quite OK for
wearing a T-shirt (almost 10 deg C :-). No problems with cameras.

For extreme cold, they used to "winterize" cameras, this for example
involved replacing lubricants inside the camera mechanism. I don't know
if it is still done today. Probably our expert repairman John Hermanson
or Clyde Soles, who is doing a lot of work in the Himalayas, could tell
you more.

The usual way of using cameras in cold is to have an external battery
pack, which can be kept warm inside your clothing and is connected to
camera with a wire. Most camera manufacturers make those packs; Olympus
does not, but you can make your own rather easily. This is what I used
in Svalbard (April - May, which is a late winter season; -30 to 0 deg C;
possible to wear a T-shirt, but definitely not all the time :-)

I am mailing you a copy of Jan's message, but try to search the list
archives for "Lens and vision" thread (follow the link at the bottom if
you don't know where the archives are).
