It seems there's some misunderstanding regarding the 4Ti's memory mode. Now,
if I'm not _way_ off-base, I'll clarify matters:

No. You misread what Hans wrote. Hans actually wrote that you take a light
reading in centre averaged metering mode (FWIW: in spot mode the memory
function basically works the same), you then store the desired light reading
_before_ taking a picture, and that value is then used during all subsequent
shots (i.e. _including_ the first picture you take with this value stored in
memory), until the memory is cleared. In other words, whatever you store is
what you will use until either of the following events occurs:
1-You manually clear the memory by pulling the lever to "clear"
2-You indirectly clear the memory by removing the lens
3-The camera clears the memory after 60 minutes have passed

Which is _exactly_ the way the memory function works :)))
You take your light reading, store it, and after that the camera doesn't
care whether you take a picture of a much darker/brighter subject, it just
uses whatever value you stored. Ah, and yes, the camera is smart enough to
compensate your reading in memory for changes in aperture, so stopping the
aperture one stop down, will result in doubling the exposure time that was
stored in the memory function; it shifts these exposure times as needed.

Asked and answered. To summarise: the camera works exactly as you wants, in
other words, you follow the following steps:
1-Turn on the light meter;
2-Meter the light in the desired mode, be it spot or centre averaged;
3-Pull the memory lever when you see the desired light metering indicated in
the LCD;
4-From now on, all photo's you will take will use the stored value, unless
you clear the memory, or change the aperture (in which case the stored
memory value will be adjusted for proper exposure).
