Subject: [OM] Macro Flash w/o TTL

Does anyone have any tips about doing macro photography
(I use a telescoping auto tube) on an OM body without TTL
flash (I use an OM-1n). I've done available light macros outside
with wonderful success, but I've never tried doing it inside with
flash. Is my best bet just to use a flash meter? If I use Normal
Auto mode on the flash, do I want the flash at the equivalent
distance from the subject to the front element or to the file plane?
As close as the front element seems way to close, but as far
away as the film plane would seem to have a way larger flash
measurement angle than the lens angle. Any tips? Other than
get a OM-3Ti! (I'm a mechanical man, no OM-4Ti for me!)
