My favorite is to aim a flash at the lens.All that light bouncing around in
there reduces contrast and provides a soft effect that is closer to what
one gets in a soft lens than to what one gets with various filtering
techniques.
Use a modelling light to position the flash so to avoid iris-shaped flare.
