OK, Claes and others, FWIW here are my 50 ores (6 US cents) worth on this
subject:

My only experience of slide-scanners is the HP Photosmart, which I used for
my Oly gallery contributions. What leaves very much to be desired in the HP
is the dynamic range, details in shadows are easily lost. Many of at least
my slides can never be scanned successfully because of this.
Sharpness is nothing to brag about IMO. Every image has to be adjusted in
Photoshop for this, the original comes out soft regardless if the slide was
taken with a 90/2 Zuiko and 10 kg tripod and mirror lockup at f/8 or
whatever.

I was quite disappointed with the HP Photosmart. I should add that there is
no way to adjust sensitivity etc. To me (with my indeed limited knowledge on
the subject) it seems like the Minolta 3Xi of scanners, everything's
automatic, just pop it (the slide) in, everything takes care of itself ...
bah!
