Shawn,

Loosening the three screws mentioned will let you remove the focusing
ring, but that will not let you replace the grease in the mechanism.
To do that you need to use another procedure:

Remove the mount by unscrewing the three shiny screws in the mount
and lift it out. That uncovers the innards, including two guiding
rails, which prevent the lens from rotating when focusing. Each is
fastened to the lens body by two screws. Removing these screws and
pulling out the rails will let you open the helicoid (is that the
correct word?) by unscrewing the lens assembly. Now it can be cleaned
and greased easily. Use as little grease as possible and remember
to select something suitable for aluminum.

The hard part is to put it back together. It is a good idea to measure
the length of the lens focused at infinity before disassembling it.
Also make a note of the position of the parts just when the thread
lets go, so you can start assembly at approximately the correct place.
Expect to try a few times to get it right. Once the helicoid is
reassembled, the rest is just the reverse order of disassembly.
Remounting the mount is easier when the aperture is set to 2.8,
as the coupling pins have to engage correctly. Of course the length
of the lens shall be the same as before disassembly ;-)

This was basically how I have done it. Maybe John H. has another,
authorized method, but this can do the job.

Hope this can be useful.

Lars
