have the studio as well lit as possible for ease of focussing,

shooting only still lifes, OK...

Yes I didn't explain myself, the studio flashes I've used have modelling
lights and you may have ambient light so you're not working in the dark,
this would be measured by the flash meter, if indeed this makes much
difference to the exposure.

I think the modelling lights stay on during the flash. Can't remember
whether we switched off the main studio lights before taking the picture,
don't think it makes much difference.

Will have to get back into the Studio, unfortunately (due to lack of
interest) they have cancelled this year's course, so I have no (cheap)
access to a studio.

None of the on-camera flashes are really adequate for portraiture, you need
the works.

I'm not an expert though, only trying to learn!
