Ok, I agree, but how many of us have made a number of mistakes the first
time out with a new piece of equipment (photographic or otherwise). If
you have never made such an error, I salute you.

Exactly, and I know *no one* who brackets enough such that it would have
saved my shots.

My "irreplaceable" comment is not based on a monetary concern (at least
not directly). What I meant by "irreplaceable" was that I'll probably
never have an occasion to be in Putre, Chile, or on the Altiplano near
Mt. Parinacota ever again...

Also, photography is almost never the sole purpose for any trip I go on.
I'm usually on scientific expeditions, and have to "catch what I can"
when I can. I never have the time I would like to spend on subjects,
but I *am* pretty good at getting lots of good shots, the Chile
experience not withstanding.

Finally, you can only have a roll "pulled" if you know in advance that
there is a problem. Having only used an OM-1N before I got my original
-4, I had no reason to believe I would have problems. However, this was
all long ago, so it's not really a big deal now... I'd just hate to see
someone make the same mistakes I did.

Cheers,
--Lee
