Greg,
  I did the NiMH conversion over a year ago.  Although I don't use the
motordrive very much, I still have only given the pack a "top off"
charge once about a month ago.  It was probibly just a precaution as the
indicator light still lit solidly.  I have yet to see any sign of the
high leakage rate that NiMH are know for.
  At the time I did the conversion, I did the math and didn't see how
using all the cells in two Varta NiMH 9v units would give any more
voltage than my M18v pack.  It appears to just give a longer service
cycle.
