Yes, it's the "Power Focus" that we've been talking about.  The IS series
of cameras have the power focus use the zoom buttons.  What you do is zoom
to the focal length of choice, press the power focus button and then focus
using the same zoom controls.  Really kind of dumb, and it does foul you up
about half the time.  Fortunately the auto focus on the IS-3 is tons better
than in the IS-1.

I verified that there is no power focus indication in the viewfinder. It is
only on the back LCD.

I passed on to Olympus a suggestion that they make the LCD backlit.  I
pointed out that the night-mode is great, but you still can't use the
camera without a flashlight to see if you have it in night-mode.  I got one
of these "Oh, we never thought of that" reactions.
