Hello Hank.

No, I don't really know much about this. 
What I do know is, that the storage life of the mercury cells is a few
years already when not in the fridge. A cool and DRY place is
recommended. The fridge is cool of course, but dry? Do you store them
dry (with silicagel) in an airtight container, like recommended for
film?
But maybe another person deserves to be called an expert on this one -
I am not.
