There was certainly a warning about this in the manuals of both the OM-1
and OM-2, but I ran some tests on my OM-1 back in the mid-70's and had
no sign of fogging through the socket - despite firing a flashgun
directly into the open MD socket a few times! It could just be caution
on Olympus part, or I might have been lucky with the camera I had - it
was one of the first production MD capable cameras, before they thought
of putting MD plates on to distinguish between them. Either way its
worth replacing the cap to prevent the ingress of dirt and dust which
will just gum up the works.

To the original poster - Olympus supplied me with a pack of 4 MD socket
caps free of charge after I lost one from my OM-2 (that didn't show
light-leaking signs either, but I didn't test it as well as the OM-1).
It might be worth giving them a call to see if they will still offer
this sort of service.

A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.
