Is there a solid base to your first statement that Olympus has dicontinued
R&D on new lenses?

As I understand from Olympus Web pages on their R&D (for recruitment
purposes) in Japanese, their R&D on optical technology consists of three
areas:

1. Design of the optics for the Olympus products (cameras, microscopes, and
endoscopes)

2. R&D in the basic optical technology of lenses with distributed indices
of refraction

3. Development of software for computer-aided optical design

I think that R&D on camera lenses fall under the first area. It seems that
the second area might be something to do with new types of lenses.

I might add that Olympus maintains two research centers, one of which has a
digital-camera R&D section among others and the other of which deals with
conventional film cameras and other optical products. The optical
technology R&D is conducted at the latter. In addition there are two
relevant research sections which might be involved in the development of an
OM-5 or new Zuiko lenses. Those are where the imaging system (top-grade
camera lenses mentioned) and cameras are being developed.
In particular I note that Olympus is keeping their newest
product/technology development secret and the photo says, "we are not able
to show what is being developed new".

The Web address of these research centers is:
http://www.olympus.co.jp/Profile/Recruit/utsugi/uketsuke.htm

By the way, these research centers do welcome students from overseas. In
one photo, a Swedish student is shown. Perhaps some of our members have
friends in the research area where Olympus is interested.
