I'm planning to go to NZ & Oz in (our) winter, defrosting too, but later
than you, mid-February to mid-March - sadly, will be a missed Zuikofest
opportunity. It's all about seeing family and friends - most of the
friends are "fellow travelers" from my 1978 London-Kathmandu overland
tour, 48+ years later.
I can't give you any gear advice, I'm just trying to decide whether I'm
even going to bother with anything beyond iPhone/iPad. Although the G9
plus 14-150 plus maybe the 100-300 is nice light and compact kit, so...
